Scott James on Teen Vogue’s Artist-to-Watch List

August 25, 2015

Teen Vogue featured musician Scott James as one of "The 20 Artists That Should Be on Your Radar Right Now" while compiling their Back-to-School Playlist. "In music, the phrase 'one to watch' gets tossed around a lot.  But....what makes an artist actually worth listening to?" asks Teen Vogue.  Scott is introduced as an "up-and-comer who has something to say both on and off his record....It's in his music and in his own words, and all you need to do is lend a curious ear."  Click here for the online feature.

The next time Scott James plays Santa Barbara, it might just be at the Bowl...If he eschews the distractions of looming college life as he has with high school, he might be living his dream before he hits drinking age.

- Santa Barbara Sentinel

Cali singer-songwriter Scott James’ new EP, Destinesia, shows off his buttery, captivating voice.

- American Songwriter

James’ ability to sound like an “old soul” will no doubt earn the introspective Destinesia comparisons to the work of the late Jeff Buckley. The way things are going, he may very well reach commercial heights that, for the most part, eluded Buckley. Grade: A

- Campus Circle

Scott James writes music with mature themes well beyond his years. In ‘Caves In’ the young talented songwriter's lyrics... are sung with a pain soaked voice that will make you an instant Scott James fan.

Destinesia] is entirely performed by James, a soft-spoken singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist from Thousand Oaks, Calif. Oh, by the way: James is only 17, but there’s nothing juvenile about his material... the artist he resembles the most on Destinesia is the late Jeff Buckley.

Why is Scott James’ debut ‘Destinesia’ so impressive? The EP features only six songs, but the mix of fantastic and original songwriting, pleasing vocals and strong musicianship are especially noteworthy since James is only 17...Definitely an artist to watch, James lyrics and songcraft carry the weight of an artist much older. Add that he has a potent touch on both guitar and piano, well it’s supernatural.

- Desert Star Weekly

Storyteller, troubadour...Scott James takes the risk of recording with just his voice and guitar (or piano), but it pays off due to terrific tone and a vocal gift that echoes Jeff Buckley.

- Music Connection

The amount of transparency and sense of true passion in this album are representative of an artist well beyond his’s an effortless fusion of soulful bluesy rock with indie pop and folk influences.

It’s hard not to swoon over a guy with a great voice, especially one who writes his own songs and accompanies them on both the guitar and the piano…With the recent release of his self-penned, six-song EP, Destinesia, Scott James is about to take over your iPod and your heart!

- Justine Magazine

The 17-year-old Southern California singer-songwriter makes his debut with this breathtaking six-song EP. Using piano on some songs, guitar on others, Scott James delves deep in terms of emotional content. His plaintive vocals are somewhat reminiscent of the great Canadian artist Ron Sexsmith. And James displays a similar gift for crafting eloquent lyrics and memorable melodies. There are also traces of the sort of the vibrant sensitivity that made Jeff Buckley so inspirational.

- San Jose Mercury News

[Destinesia] brings to mind the sweeping, bare-boned folk of Jeff Buckley.
